An Administrative Review is a formal process that allows applicants to challenge a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) decision they believe was made incorrectly due to a case-working error. This option is available for certain immigration visa refusals, without having to file a full appeal or judicial review. The review is conducted by a different UKVI officer who was not involved in the original decision.
Administrative Review is not a re-evaluation of your application but a reconsideration of the decision to determine if an error was made in the handling or interpretation of the evidence. It is a paper-based process, meaning you cannot submit new evidence unless specifically asked.
You may be eligible for Administrative Review if:
You have received a refusal or decision on a Points-Based System application (e.g. Student, Skilled Worker, Innovator).
Your application to remain in the UK under certain routes was refused.
You were granted leave but with errors, such as incorrect visa conditions or validity.
You were refused entry clearance from outside the UK under an eligible immigration route.
You were issued limited leave instead of indefinite leave, where ILR was appropriate.
Your decision letter will tell you if Administrative Review is available and how to apply.
Applications made inside the UK: You must apply within 14 calendar days of receiving the decision.
Applications made outside the UK (entry clearance): You must apply within 28 calendar days of the refusal.
You must clearly state how you believe a case-working error occurred. These can include:
Incorrect calculation of points (e.g., English language or maintenance funds).
Misunderstanding or misinterpretation of evidence provided.
Factual mistakes (e.g., wrong passport number or nationality recorded).
Application of the wrong immigration rules.
No new evidence will be considered unless it directly relates to the error identified.
You must act quickly – time limits are strict and inflexible.
Be precise – only highlight errors in how your case was decided.
It’s not an appeal – you cannot use this process to submit new facts or documents unless requested.
Fee is non-refundable – even if the review is successful.
