Skilled Worker Visa

The Skilled Worker visa allows overseas nationals to take up employment in the UK with an approved sponsoring employer. This route is the main work-based immigration path for skilled professionals and has replaced the previous Tier 2 (General) visa.

Our firm offers tailored support for both UK employers looking to sponsor workers and for individuals who have received job offers and want to understand their visa options.

What is the Skilled Worker Visa?

The Skilled Worker route enables UK-based employers to sponsor non-UK workers for roles that meet specific skill and salary thresholds. It offers a route for individuals to live and work in the UK legally.

Dependants, including spouses, partners, and children, can accompany or join the main visa holder. The visa can be granted for up to five years and may lead to settlement provided the eligibility conditions are met.

Skilled Worker Visa Requirements

The requirements for this visa are detailed in Appendix Skilled Worker.

Applicants must accrue a total of 70 points, which includes 50 mandatory points and 20 tradeable points based on Options A – F. Full 50 Mandatory points must be scored and one of the Options A – F must be satisfied to score 20 Tradeable points.

Sponsorship 20
Job at an appropriate skill level 20
English language skills at level B1 (intermediate) 10

Sponsorship Requirements

  • 20 mandatory points relate to employment sponsorship, placing requirements on both the worker and their employer (the sponsor). The sponsor must hold a valid A-rated sponsorship license and have paid the Immigration Skills Charge. The Home Office assesses the genuineness of the vacancy and employment.

Certificate of Sponsorship
  • Before applying, the UK sponsor must issue a valid Certificate of Sponsorship to confirm eligibility.

Minimum Salary Requirement
  • The general minimum salary threshold is £38,700 per year or the job’s ‘going rate.’

  • You can be paid between 70% and 90% of the standard going rate for your job if your salary is at least £30,960 per year and you meet one of the following criteria:

    • you’re under 26, studying or a recent graduate, or in professional training

    • you have a science, technology, engineering or maths (STEM) PhD level qualification that’s relevant to your job (if you have a relevant PhD level qualification in any other subject your salary must be at least £26,100)

    • you have a postdoctoral position in science or higher education

English Language Requirement

Applicants need a minimum B1 level English proficiency in all four components of speaking, listening, reading and writing, proven through qualifications or an approved test, unless exempt.

This can be shown through:
  • A recognised English language qualification

  • Nationality from an English-speaking country

  • An academic qualification taught in English

Financial Maintenance Requirement

Applicants must show at least £1,270 in savings, held for 28 consecutive days. Sponsors can certify maintenance on the Certificate of Sponsorship.
