Naturalisation as a British Citizen

Naturalisation is the formal route for foreign nationals to gain British citizenship. This process allows individuals to make the UK their permanent home and access the full range of rights enjoyed by British citizens, such as voting, public services, and the ability to apply for a UK passport.

Eligibility Criteria

Residence Requirements

Your eligibility depends on how long you’ve lawfully lived in the UK:

  • Married to a British citizen:

You need to have resided in the UK for at least 3 years.

  • Not married to a British citizen:

    A 5-year residency is required.

  • In both cases, applicants must also:

Have held Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) or Settled Status for at least 12 months before applying (unless married to a British citizen, in which case ILR/Settled Status can be held at the time of application).

Absences from the UK

Applicants must not have:
  • Spent over 450 days outside the UK in the 5-year period (or 270 days in the 3-year period if married to a British citizen).

  • Been abroad for more than 90 days in the final 12 months before applying.

Other Key Requirements

  • Good Character

You must be of good character, meaning:
    • No serious or recent criminal convictions.

    • You’ve complied with UK immigration laws.

    • You do not have serious financial liabilities to the government, such as unpaid taxes or fines.

English Language Requirements

You’ll need to prove your ability to speak and understand English, unless you:
  • Are from a majority English-speaking country,

  • Are aged 65 or older, or Have a condition preventing you from meeting the requirement.

  • Proof can include an approved English language test or qualifications taught in English.

Life in the UK Test

You must pass this test to show knowledge of British values, history, and institutions. It must be taken at an approved test centre and a pass certificate must be submitted with your application.

Citizenship Ceremony

  • If your application is successful, you’ll be invited to a citizenship ceremony, where you’ll take an Oath or Affirmation of Allegiance to the UK. This marks the final step in becoming a British citizen.
