A UK Visit Visa allows stays up to 6 months for tourism, family visits, business, short courses, or medical treatment.
Registration is another legal route to becoming a British citizen, primarily available to certain groups of individuals who have a specific connection to the UK. Unlike naturalisation, which is generally discretionary, registration is often based on entitlement—meaning that if you meet the criteria, the Home Office must approve your application. This route is commonly used by children, certain adults born to British parents, or those with other qualifying circumstances.
Born in the UK to parents who later acquire British citizenship or settled status.
Born abroad to British parents who themselves were born in the UK.
Children with indefinite leave to remain (ILR) or settled status who have lived in the UK for a minimum of 5 years.
Individuals born before 1983 to a British mother (British citizenship could not be automatically passed through mothers before this date).
Individuals who renounced British citizenship and now wish to resume it.
Individuals with connections to former British colonies or overseas territories under specific legal circumstances.
Those who were stateless at birth and later acquired the right to register.
Each category has its own rules, and eligibility is based on the applicant’s personal and family background.
Having lawful residence in the UK for a specified period (commonly 5 years).
Holding ILR or settled status for at least 12 months before applying, unless exempt.
Being physically present in the UK at the start of the qualifying period.
Applicants aged 10 or over must demonstrate good character.
This involves a clean criminal record, compliance with UK immigration rules, and no serious debts to UK public services.
You may need to provide proof of your parent’s British citizenship or immigration status at the time of your birth.
If the registration is approved and the applicant is 18 or older, they will be invited to attend a citizenship ceremony.
At the ceremony, they must make an Oath or Affirmation of Allegiance and a pledge of loyalty to the UK.
