The Student Visa category is designed for individuals over 16 years old planning to undertake further or higher education courses in the UK.
You must be at least 16 years old.
You need to have an unconditional offer to study an approved course from an educational institution that is a licensed student sponsor.
You must show that you have sufficient knowledge of the English language—at least CEFR Level B2 for university-level courses, or Level B1 for courses below degree level.
You must demonstrate that you can financially support yourself and cover your tuition fees without relying on public funds.
If you are aged 16 or 17, you must have permission from your parent or legal guardian to study in the UK.
You may qualify for a Student Visa if your chosen course falls under one of the following categories:
A full-time course below degree level (RQF levels 3 to 5) requiring at least 15 hours of classroom-based study per week.
A full-time course at degree level or higher (RQF levels 6 to 8).
A full-time course at degree level or higher (RQF levels 6 to 8) that is equivalent to a UK higher education qualification and forms part of a broader study program based overseas.
A part-time course at postgraduate level (RQF level 7 or above), provided it meets the relevant visa conditions.
An approved foundation program for postgraduate medical or dental training.
An English language course with a proficiency level of CEFR B2 or above.
You need a CAS reference number, valid for 6 months from issue, with details of your course, study level, place of study, accommodation, fees, and English language proficiency
You must prove you have funds for course fees for 1 academic year (up to 9 months) and living costs, varying depending on whether you study in inner London or elsewhere.
How much money you need depends on where you will be studying. You will need either:
£1,483 per month (for up to 9 months) for courses in London
£1,136 per month (for up to 9 months) for courses outside London
You need English proficiency at CEFR Level B2 for degree-level courses or B1 for sub- degree level courses, usually proven by a Secure English Language Test (SELT)
Degree-level students can work 20 hours per week during term-time and full-time outside term-time.
You can switch to this route from within the UK, except from certain visa categories like Visitor or Short-term Student.
The student route does not lead directly to settlement.
Switching from Student Visa to Work Visa routes
Students may switch to various work visa potentially leading to settlement. Options include Skilled Worker, Graduate Visa, scale-up worker and more, under specific conditions.
