The Child Student Visa is intended for children aged 4 to 17 who wish to study at an independent school in the UK that holds a valid student sponsor licence issued by the Home Office.
The Child Student Visa is intended for children aged 4 to 17 who wish to study at an independent school in the UK that holds a valid student sponsor licence issued by the Home Office. This visa is not suitable for individuals aged 18 or over who plan to pursue further or higher education; they should instead apply under the general Student Visa route.
To qualify for a Child Student Visa, applicants must meet the following conditions:
Be between 4 and 17 years old.
Have received an unconditional offer to study at a licensed independent school in the UK.
Provide evidence of suitable care and accommodation arrangements during their stay.
Be able to cover tuition and living expenses without accessing public funds.
Obtain written consent from a parent or legal guardian.
The visa applies to courses that fall within the following categories:
Studies that follow the UK’s National Curriculum.
Qualifications listed under the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) at level 3 or below.
Courses that meet the standards of independent school inspections in the UK.
The sponsoring school will issue a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) number. This must be used in the visa application and is valid for six months from the date of issue. The CAS outlines important details such as the course content, tuition fees, accommodation arrangements, and any advance payments made.
Applicants must prove that they have enough money to pay for both their education and living expenses while in the UK. This includes boarding fees for students attending residential schools, or living costs for those staying independently or with a parent or guardian. The required amount will vary depending on where the child will live (e.g., inside or outside London).
It is possible to switch to the Child Student visa from within the UK, except from visa categories such as Visitor or Short-term Student visas.
Successful applicants can enter the UK up to one month before their course begins, but not before the start date listed on their visa.
The Child Student Visa is not a route to settlement in the UK. However, holders may be eligible to switch to the Student Visa category if they meet the relevant requirements.
Be currently in the UK on a valid Child Student Visa.
Be aged 17 or under.
Hold an unconditional offer from a licensed sponsor.
Possess a valid CAS.
Prove they have sufficient financial resources to support themselves and pay for the course.
